Born
in London, England, Dennis Elliott began playing drums
in his family's band at age 5. While other children were
out playing ball he was practicing and learning to read
music. He turned professional when he was 16, and played
with various bands touring Europe. Elliott met his wife,
Iona in New York when he was touring America with the
jazz band "IF" on his 20th birthday.
Several
years later his wife introduced him to woodturning by
giving him a
lathe attachment for his Black & Decker power drill.
He found his new hobby very
relaxing and spent countless hours developing his technique
and skill.
Elliott
and his wife settled in New York in 1975 and never looked
back. Dennis joined and was a founding member of the rock
band "Foreigner" and traveled
around the world with them. With this new band he achieved
some notoriety but
continued to develop his unique turning and carving style
when he was home. He
experimented with all types of local and foreign hardwoods
and burl woods but
found Maple Burl to be the best suited for aesthetics,
stability and durability. His Bigleaf Maple Burl Wall
Sculptures, large vessels and interactive "Gemini
Orbital" pieces are instantly recognizable and have
been internationally acclaimed. His published works are
continually featured in magazines and books worldwide.
Dennis
was awarded "The Cohn Award for Excellence in Wood"
at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Show. His works are
in over a dozen Museum
collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum
- Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C., The Museum of Arts
& Design in New York City, and the Boston Museum of
Fine Arts.
In
1996 Dennis did a live online chat on AOL's Auditorium
and has his own web
presence at http://www.denniselliott.com
Elliott
is very well known and very much admired in his field.
His work has inspired both fellow artists and collectors
alike. His work is in many private and corporate collections
and has been featured in numerous gallery and museum exhibitions.
His work can be found in prestigious galleries around
the
country.
Several
years after retiring from the band in 1993, Dennis and
his wife moved to SW Florida in 1997. Dennis when not
at work creating his works in wood enjoys boating.
